Our mission: To provide a place of refuge, nurturing, medical treatment and care for neglected, abandoned, lost or unwanted tortoises. To educate and provide guidance to the community regarding the proper care, nutrition and habitat for tortoises. To increase awareness of and prevent the abuse these gentle creatures often suffer.
If you can't handle them, we'll rescue them!
We are located in Homestead, Florida - midway between Miami and the Keys.. and are the only shelter dedicated solely to tortoises in the South Florida area.
We are available 24/7 to provide assistance, information, answer any questions and of course .. to assist any tortoise in need!
Tortoises eat LOTS of fresh fruits and vegetables each day. Other expenses include bedding and medical supplies, construction and maintenance, taxes, insurance and fuel! We do not have any large sponsors and do this all out of our own funds. Any bit you can donate will go a long way and be greatly appreciated. What are the main differences between land tortoises and a sea turtles?
Although tortoises and turtles are both reptiles, there are major differences. Land tortoises have a dome shaped shells, they have short and sturdy feet with bent legs, are herbivores and live from 80-150 years. Sea turtles mostly have flat, streamlined shells, have webbed feet with long claws, are omnivores and live 20-40 years.
